In the early 2000s, scientists discovered a third class of photoreceptors in the human retina: intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (ipRGCs) expressing the photopigment melanopsin (Berson et al., 2002). These cells do not form visual images; instead, they project directly via the retinohypothalamic tract to the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN), the master clock that synchronizes every peripheral organ clock in the liver, pancreas, and heart.
The Window Glass Problem:
Standard double-pane window glass filters out substantial blue-green photic energy, requiring up to 50 times longer exposure indoors to achieve the same SCN phase reset as stepping outside.
