Born in the port of Eresos on the Aegean island of Lesbos, Theophrastus (c. 371 – c. 287 BC) was Aristotle’s chosen successor as head of the Lyceum in Athens. While earlier traditions attributed plant properties to mythological spirits, Theophrastus introduced rigorous empirical observation to the vegetable kingdom, earning him the eternal title of The Father of Botany.
