The Ancient Elongated Spice That Preceded Black Pepper

Long before round black pepper berries dominated international spice routes, Long Pepper (Piper retrofractum and Piper longum), known in Sanskrit as Pippali (पिप्पली), was the prized pungent spice traded across Rome, India, and North Africa.


1. The Trikatu Synergy (The "Three Pungents")

In Ayurveda, Pippali is paired with Black Pepper and Dry Ginger to form Trikatu:
