The King of Carotenoids from Freshwater Microalgae

When environmental freshwater ponds dry up under intense summer heat, the unicellular green microalga Haematococcus pluvialis enters a protective survival cyst state, synthesizing colossal amounts of a brilliant red pigment: Astaxanthin (3,3\'-dihydroxy-$\beta,\beta$-carotene-4,4\'-dione).
